Music Director Uttam Singh on S. D. Burman Dada (Part Two)

Music Director Uttam Singh has won a number of awards, including Filmfare Award and Zee Cine Award for 'Dil To Pagal Hai' (1997). He was also nominated for Filmfare Award for 'Gadar - Ek Prem Kahani' (2001). Gadar brought him a number of other awards.

Here, Uttam Singh ji tells us how Dada would would be very happy if his neighborhood paanwala told him that the songs of his latest released film were super hit. (Not discussed here is that Dada had a habit of taking opinion of his household servants after composing a song, as he felt that is was the common man who had a discerning ear for a film song.)

Uttam Singh tells us how in Guide (1965), a dance song 'Piya tose naina lage re' has been composed by Dada in seven matras in roopak taal. This is the only song in the last 50 years, till date.

We are told how a senior producer-director had to wait for one and a half month before he could gain entry in to Dada's bungalow called 'The Jet', after which he was told initially told to go to another composer . He was lucky, as there were many others who had to wait for up to six months.

Enjoy this rare interview, to get an insight in to the working of the genius that Burman Dada was.
