A lesson in counterplay and prophylaxis · Road to GM, Game 222

When the position is close to winning, think about preventing counterplay, not about winning!

I made the mistake of thinking that everything wins easily and that my opponent has no resources. That was true only if I see how I can prevent him from creating resources ad actually focus on doing so before trying to convert. Instead, with a series of simple maneuvers, my opponent managed to complicate matters and force me to spend 45 minutes calculating lines which seemed muddy at best. So from a simple game I got myself into a defensive position which was easier for my opponent to play. One move, or, better said, one idea, could have prevented all of that.
