Positions with opposite colored bishops · Chess Middlegames
Opposite colored bishops often mean a dead draw in the endgame, but in complex middlegames the situation is completely different - they favor the side attacking and most often reduce drawing chances significantly.

Opposite colored bishops mean that each side is unable to control a color complex adequately. In other words, each side has greater influence over one color complex and weaknesses on the other.
That means that positions with opposite bishops often favor the attacker, as the other player is unable to oppose their opponent's bishop.
I have used five instructive example games in which the material imbalance was used with perfection:
1. Alexander Kotov - Mikhail Botvinnik, USSR Championship 1955
2. Svetozar Gligoric - Borislav Ivkov, Bled 1961
3. Garry Kasparov - Manuel Bosboom, Blitz 1999
4. Jose Raul Capablanca - Juan Corzo, 1901 Match, Rd. 13
5. Alexander Alekhine - Akiba Rubinstein, Exhibition Game 1910
