Once a person has chickenpox, the virus stays in their body. The virus can reactivate later in life and cause shingles.

Most people who develop shingles only have it one time during their life. However, you can have shingles more than once.

So is Shingles itself a contagious illness?
The answer is Yes and No. If you had chickenpox when you were a child, you are at risk for shingles. If you get shingles, you are contagious but can't give someone shingles.
You can, however, infect people with chickenpox if they haven't been exposed to the virus in the past and haven't been vaccinated against it.
For this reason, it's important to take precautions, particularly if you are close to someone with a weakened immune system.
