Tying down your home & protecting your porch roof against the threat of a tornado, & wind blow off.
In this episode of Forever Home, Drew walks us through the steps our team took to help ensure this roof stays in place, during any high-wind events which may attack our region. We just had a massive EF2 tornado touch down not far from this jobside over in Oxford PA, so the topic is especially fresh in everyone's mind.
For this roof, and a "design level wind event" in Pennsylvania, we are anticipating a possible wind uplift force of somewhere between 30 and 35 Pounds Per Square Foot... 12'x20' deck... 7,200 to 8,400 lbs of force, and we can subtract off that, roughly 80% of the dead load of the roof and trusses and plywood above the beams.
See chapter 4 of this PDF for more on Design Level Wind Events...

If you are going to spend your hard earned money to build or rebuild your deck, make sure you ask the right questions on the front end, and select a contractor who is going to do the job correctly....
Here are a few examples and we'd love to read your suggestions in the comments below.
-- How are you going to connect the addition to the current house?
-- What is a beam pocket and how is it used?
-- How many pounds of potential wind uplift force do we need to consider when designing our deck supports to both hold UP the roof, and hold DOWN the roof in the event of a high wind event?
-- Walk me through the various fasteners and connectors you'll be using in our build.
Remember, when we're finished with your project, you'll be proud to say, "It's not just done, It was #CopeBUILT!"
