Why we’re disengaged at work | Barry Schwartz, Swarthmore College

“Why is it that we’ve allowed work to change people in ways that have made work largely unsatisfactory?” This is the question that Dr. Barry Schwartz, professor of Psychology at Swarthmore College, studies.

Speaking at the re:Work 2016 event, the Why We Work author lists the elements people seek in work: engagement, challenge, autonomy, mastery, social engagement, and meaning. If work has these characteristics, it is “good” work, but unfortunately this is not the case for most people. According to a Gallup poll, only 13% of people across the world are engaged in their job. In exploring the reasons for this, Schwartz returns to the ideas of Karl Marx and Adam Smith, discussing how companies are leaving money on the table by not more thoughtfully engaging their employees.

At re:Work 2016, Schwartz also moderated a panel of representatives from companies trying to do the right thing for their employees which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/HH1JbQ8tEAQ
