Survival: Ruth DeFries - Featured Clip

Two hundred thousand years ago, humans were hunting prey and gathering fruits much like our other ape relatives. Today, most of the planet bears the mark of our species’ success in producing vast quantities of food to support an increasingly urban population. This fundamental transformation evolves from a long history of human ingenuity and technologies to manipulate nature in our favor. From this long view, our current times are part of a continual series of experiments. There never has been, nor can there ever be, assurance that our species will continue to succeed in the future, but the evolutionary pattern illustrates the power of human ingenuity to solve problems and create new ones in their stead.
