FEC / Brightline Roadbed Excavator Train near Pineda, FL - March 20, 2021

It's not everyday that I see a CAT excavator working up in a gondola train car.
On this unique train, an excavator dumps roadbed material from gondola cars onto the future path of the second FEC (Florida East Coast) railway track through this area. This construction is a part of the Brightline (formerly Virgin Trains USA) high-speed Orlando expansion. At some point after the roadbed is smoothed out by the bulldozers, another train will come to deposit gravel (ballast). Then, the new tracks will be laid.
The Brightline Orlando extension is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
