On this day in 1945, President Truman announced that Japan had surrendered. Here is a British Movietone report showing the signing of the surrendering documents along with President Truman's announcement.
At Okinawa on the eve of the Japanese surrender hundreds of transport planes were waiting to take troops to begin the occupation. General MacArthur landed at Atsugi and later board the 'Missouri' where he was greeted by Admiral Nimitz. The surrender documents were signed for
Japan by Foreign Minister Shigemitsu and General Umezu. MacArthur used two pens to sign the document and then handed one to General Wainwright and the other to General Percival.
CUT STORY: KS Allied Fleet off Okinawa. Aerials shots of Okinawa, transport planes waiting to take-off, in flight. 'Bataan' MacArthur's plane comes into land at Atsugi aerodrome. American launch alongside, Jap representative comes aboard. Led by Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, with a wooden leg and wearing top. Elevated shot of Jap representatives, walking across the deck of the ship. Elevated shot of table where documents will be signed. General MacArthur walks up to mike and addresses all. Finishing says "Representatives of the Emperor of Japan and Government, and Chief of Staffs will sign at the places indicated". Elevated shot as Shigemitsu walks to place, sits down and signs, followed by General Umezu of Imperial General Staff. MacArthur orders Generals Wainwright and Percival to accompany him to the table where he signs the surrender document. He hands one pen to Wainwright, another to Percival. Cut-ins of the crew, American troops watching proceedings, also Jap cameramen. Jap representatives look on. MacArthur announces that "proceedings are now closed". Near the beginning of the story is a shot of 'Old Glory' flying. see story number 46065/2 for cuts
