Trouble in Little Rock, Arkansas - 1957 | Movietone Moment | 4 September 2020

On this day in 1957, the National Guard prevented nine African American students from entering Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Here is a British Movietone report about the ensuing clashes with police.

Little Rock, Arkansas, the white population are determined to prevent colored students from going to the school their own children attend. A near-riot developed and police made a number of arrests among the ring-leaders of the white pickets. Later, the Central High School was sealed off, by orders of the Governor, who called out the State National Guard. President Eisenhower then sent five hundred troops to Little Rock to keep law and order.
