Landscape Photography Isle of Skye PLUS Photographing the Northern Lights
Landscape Photography Isle of Skye - Photographing the Northern Lights. Pictures from my latest Photography Workshop
In March I set off to the Isle of Skye to run one of my two annual Isle of Skye 5-Day Workshops. Most of us travelled up from West Yorkshire on Sunday, the day before the course start date. The whole day proved to be more than eventful.
Firstly I had to collect the guys from a couple of different areas in my town. This in itself proved to be a huge challenge. The day before our town experienced blizzard conditions caused by the Beast from the East. I even struggled to get off my drive. It took me an hour to round the guys up. This journey should have taken 10 minutes. Was this a sign of terrible things to come? As it happens once we hit the M62 and traveled past Manchester, the rest of trip was plain sailing.
My eventful day was far from over though... The journey took us around 9 hours which is pretty normal. We had just finished unpacking when we got a message from Dougie the owner of the B&B that the Northern Lights were due that night. My Aurora Borealis AP alerted me to an imminent viewing too. It wasn't wrong!
At first, we just saw and weird light which shone vertically from the ground to the sky. We just thought it was a streak of light pollution. It wasn't. Unbeknown to me I actually witnessed and photographed a very rare event. It still makes the hair on the back of neck stand on end! It was called Dubbed STEVE for short this phenomenon is called Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. After Steve, it was time for the Northern Lights to do their thing, WOW. This was a first for me, I was buzzing all week!
The workshop went really well. We only had one day which we couldn't actually get out there and shoot. The weather was just awful. I used the day to teach my post-processing and then we headed off to do a little reccying. After the previous two days hiking the relaxed day was more than called for.
