Mukhtaran Mai is interviewed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy at TEDxKarachi 2011

About the Speaker

Mukhtaran Mai was no different from the other ordinary women of Muzaffar Garh district of Pakistan until she was struck by a horrible calamity that changed the course of her life. Instead of succumbing to the tradition of committing suicide after being gang raped, she stood up for herself and became a champion defender of women's rights and education through her Mukhtaran Mais Women Welfare Organisation in the southern region of Punjab Pakistan where women are victims of atrocities like which she had to suffer from.

Her struggle for justice and the courage and valor she displayed gained attention from not only local but also international media and institutions. The Fatimah Jinnah Gold Medal for Bravery and Courage from the Pakistani Governement and The North-South Prize of the Council of Europe for contribution to Human Rights are amongst the most notable awards she received. In 2005, Glamour Magazine named her "Glamour Woman of the Year". The Laurentian University of Canada awarded an honourary doctorate degree to Mukhtaran Mai in 2010. Her autobiography has been translated in 23 languages and she has been praised by dignitaries like Laura Bush and the French foreign minister.
