Let’s talk pregnancy reality and the pregnant influencers and celebrities we see on social media. I am blessed to be able to say that I had an easy pregnancy. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed being pregnant! I embraced the weight gain (almost 16kgs), and my changing body with open arms. I was lucky in that I didn’t get any morning sickness, and felt fit and healthy throughout my pregnancy. However I know that not every woman has the same experience. Through social media and in real life, i’ve spoken to many women who found pregnancy a huge struggle, both mentally and physically. From food aversions, to throwing up, to feeling generally nauseous and the heart burn! To aching feet, a heavy belly and trying to sleep - it’s not always a walk in the park. It can be hard to accept and feel confident in your pregnant body. If you’re feeling sick and exhausted on top of the physical bodily changes your body goes through during pregnancy, it can definitely be a challenge to like what you see in the mirror.
Let’s look at it this way; we know we are beyond blessed to be carrying our babies. We know it will be worth it when we have our precious babies in our arms - but it doesn't necasarily make it easier to love the changing body we see in the mirror, ESPECIALLY when we find ourselves comparing what we see, to the 'perfect' pregnant bodies we see on instagram.
But here's the truth of it - your body is gaining weight for a few reasons;
1: Your baby. This lil one may be small, but they can feel super heavy!
2: Water weight. If you’ve given birth you’ll know aaall about it when your water breaks! I was shocked at how much water poured out of me during labour (sorry, TMI!)
3: Boobies! You boobs will likely grow bigger in size during pregnancy in order to feed your baby when he/she arrives. Whether you decide to breastfeed or formula feed is entirely your prerogative (you do you, mama!) but until your boobs realise which way your baby is going to be fed, they will be bigger and heavier than you’re used to. I feel like mine weigh a ton!
4: Placenta, womb, blood and all that good stuff. It can get pretty heavy making a baby!
5: Weight gain in general. Not only did my belly grow when I was pregnant, but so did my bum, my thighs and my arms! Your body will usually naturally hold on to some extra weight when you’re pregnant in order to nourish itself, and your baby, and keep you both strong.
When you look at it this way, your body is pretty darn clever! I know it's easier said than done, but try not to compare yourself and your pregnant body to what you see on social media. Rememeber - social media and the pictures you see online RARELY show you how a person actually looks in real life. I love you guys. Stephanie x
