Feeding day at the GG Lion Sanctuary

🥩 Lion Feeding day 🥩
We are a sanctuary for lions, not the wild, so our lions unfortunately cannot hunt for themselves. Mike our lions manager is in charge of our lion feeding schedule and decides which lion gets what body part.
The smaller prides of 3 lions or less get ‘pieces’ of a carcass and the larger prides of 3+ lions get a whole carcass. Mike knows exactly which body piece each lion needs as the lions need different parts of the body not just muscle meat. We rotate on every feed the pieces they get so they are getting all the nutrients they need. It’s no good just giving lions a big piece of leg every time, they need ribs, brain, sinew, cartilage, stomach, liver, heart. etc so Mike manages this.
The lions are fed twice a week and males get approximately 25kg each feed, females 20kg.
This amounts to us needing around
3.8 tonnes of meat a week which is approximately 15 animal carcasses a week, usually cattle. Everything we receive has already died before collection, usually of natural causes. We never feed the lions ‘live’ animals. This is illegal in captivity in South Africa, not to mention cruel as the prey would have no chance of escape in an enclosure.
Mike collects all this meat throughout the week from different cattle farms who call us when they have had fatalities. Collection of 1 carcass takes Mike around 2hrs. That’s 30hrs a week Mike spends driving for lion food. Then the carcasses are to butcher into 25kg pieces when we get them here.
On this video we fed Bright Eyes & Boy, Tonga who helps himself in his drive through camp, then Aslan, Fonda & Suzie, Leo and Reth, then Tarzan & Zorro. 🦁
