St. John of Damascus, the Theologian who defended Icons in 8th century, lost his arm, torn away by heretics, the most Holy Theotokos (Mother of God) restored St. John's Arm, and to thank Her, st. John painted famous Icon of Mother of God the Three Handed Theotokos, the Third Hand represents his restored Hand.
