Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750):
NUN KOMM, DER HEIDEN HEILAND (BWV 61)
Bach wrote the cantata in Weimar, in his first year as the court organist of Johann Ernst von Sachsen-Weimar, for the First Sunday of Advent, performed in the Schlosskirche (court chapel) on 2 December 1714. The hymn is Luthers transformation of the advent hymn 'Veni redemptor gentium'. Bach superimposes the old medieval chant on top of the most avant-garde music he then knew, the French ouverture of Louis XIV's court composer, Lully, and thereby brings just the right flavour, awe and expectation to this first day in the liturgical calendar.
1. movement: Coro (Ouverture)
Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland,
Der Jungfrauen Kind erkannt,
Des sich wundert alle Welt,
Gott solch Geburt ihm bestellt.
(Martin Luther, 1524)
Now come, the gentiles' Savior,
As the Virgin's child revealed,
At whom marvels all the world
That God him this birth ordained.
The Monteverdi Choir
The English Baroque Soloists
Conducted by John Eliot Gardiner
Live recording from St. Maria im Kapitol, Köln (Cologne), 3 December 2000
The handwriting is by Johann Lorenz Bach (1695 - 1773), who was a pupil of J. S. Bach in Weimar from 1713 to 1717. The score can be found here:
