Banned Books for Kids (1 of 2)

In this course, Linda Walvoord de Velder and Deborah Van Duinen will share insights and lead
discussion about literature for children ages 6-12. Consideration will be given to the barriers
faced by authors, editors, educators, reviewers, publishers, and librarians, and whether bans
intimidate writers and publishers. Controversial reading topics for children, including birth and
adoption, Black history, sex education, and strangers, will also be addressed. Van Duinen will
highlight how censorship issues affect her work training tomorrow’s teachers and planning
programs like the “Big Read” and “Little Read.”
