Daytripping in Columbia SC

Come along with us on a daytrip to Columbia, the capital of South Carolina.

Here’s a link to a Google Map of our visited locations in Columbia https://bit.ly/2Tg6Djq

Stop 1
We start our day with brunch at DiPratos Deli. It is a great relaxed spot with many brunch and lunch options. Complete with a deli counter and enormous sandwiches, it is rooted in the NY style deli but has a vibrant southern charm that is inviting to all. (PRO TIP: get the sharp white pimento cheese with the warm pita chips. OMG they are heavenly!!!)

Stop 2
The State Capital building was our next stop. We walked around the grounds, toured inside and listened to a band playing for a Rock The Vote event. It is open to the public and is a beautiful building inside. If you want to burn off some calories, you can hike up the steps to the main entrance a few times. The steps are shallow and are an easy walk to the top. If you are a resident of SC, it is an interesting place to check out.

Stop 3
From the Capital we headed up Main street a few blocks is the Mast General Store. These stores are located throughout the Carolinas and Tennessee and are a favorite stop for unique gifts. It’s the quintessential old skool general store with a great outfitter shop and the most knick-knacks that you could imagine. Kids of all ages will love the MANY candy options from Mallow Cups to candy cigarettes, and so much more!

Stop 4
From there we headed to Finlay Park. At 14 acres, it is the largest and most visited park in downtown Columbia. The park opened in 1991. In the park, there was a scenic waterfall along with cascading mountain type stream falling to the park lake. Unfortunately, this waterfall was broke when we visited and we found out that it has been broken for the better half of two years. There are picnic tables, two playground areas, and a cafe. All of it was closed when we were there.

Stop 5
Our next stop was the public gardens at the Governor’s Mansion complex. It is a quiet, lush garden area that has many paths and areas to be discovered. On our trip, it was still early and spring flowers had not “sprung” yet. However, it was still very green and very well kept. We took our time walking through the gardens and really loved the peace and tranquility found in there. Just to note, the Governors Mansion is closed on the weekends but the grounds are open to the public and are free. We highly recommend this stop.

Stop 6
Wrapping up in Columbia, we headed back stopping along the way at Lake Wateree State Park to check out their camping facilities. It is a great campground with back-in paved sites. All looked level and easy to get in and out. There is also a new camping area that will be opening later this year. There is a store with fishing gear, camping essentials, sundries and gifts. In addition to camping, there are MANY picnic tables/ shelters and benches to picnic, fish and relax by the water. It is certainly worth checking out.
