Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia pain is located on the bottom of the foot near the toes. The metatarsal bones are located in the forefoot. Five metatarsals exist in each foot. These bones connect the toes to the midfoot. The metatarsals are numbered one through five from medial to lateral, meaning the bone connected to the great toe is number one & the metatarsal bone connected to the smallest toe is number five.
The heads of the metatarsal bones are at the distal end of the bones, meaning they are close to the toes. The transverse, AKA metatarsal arch, of the foot runs from the head of the first metatarsal to the head of the fifth metatarsal.
The pain is located on the bottom of the foot, known as the plantar. It is located directly underneath the head of a metatarsal bone, which is just posterior to where the metatarsals & toes connect. It is most commonly below the second, third & fourth metatarsal heads, in that order. The symptoms usually begin in an insidious manner. It is usually described as sharp, stabbing, burning or achy & is aggravated by walking, standing, jumping & running, especially sprinting.
Several anatomical & biomechanical sources are precursors to metatarsalgia, including: collapsed transverse arch, hyperpronation & weak foot muscles, especially the toe flexors.
Metatarsalgia is an overuse injury. Too much training combined with inadequate rest is the foremost extrinsic source.
Prevention & recovery from metatarsalgia may be accomplished by eliminating the intrinsic & extrinsic factors that contribute to its formation.
