Lake Mývatn is a stunning and serene lake located in the north of Iceland. It was formed around 2,300 years ago during a volcanic eruption. The lake covers an area of approximately 37 square kilometers and has a maximum depth of 4.5 meters. The name "Myvatn" translates to "Midge Lake" in Icelandic, as the area is known for its abundant midge population.
The lake is surrounded by a unique and diverse landscape, including geothermal hot springs, pseudocraters, lava fields, and volcanic hills. The ecosystem around Lake Myvatn is rich in birdlife, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers.
Due to its volcanic origins, the water in Lake Myvatn is rich in minerals, and the lake's surroundings offer numerous opportunities for geothermal bathing and relaxation. One of the most famous attractions near the lake is the geothermal nature baths known as Mývatn Nature Baths, offering a soothing and rejuvenating experience.
