80s Song Was So Revolutionary, It INSPIRED a Beatle Out of a 5 Year Retirement! | Professor Of Rock

Coming Up a song that missed the top 40 in the early 80s but has since then Rock Lobster by the B-52s has become a modern day standard and a major influence after it was released. Cindy Wilson tells the story of how it helped John Lennon come out of retirement and how she and Kate Pierson mimicked sea creatures to get it’s interesting sound and Fred Schneider’s deadpan delivery. The song was punctuated their homage to Yoko Ono. The story of a classic New Avant Guard classic is coming up next.

If you go back and look at the billboard charts for May 24th 1980 you’ll see the decade starting to take shape. Up and down the charts you could see a clear diversity of genres. Disco act LIpps inc was burning with the last flames of the genre at #2 with FUNKYTOWN, the Soft rock smooth sounds of Air Supply at #3 with Lost in Love and Ambrosia at #6 with Biggest Part of Me and Linda Ronstadt and Yacht Rocker Christopher Cross were at 8 and 9 Further down the charts Pink Floyd Another Brick in the Wall was falling from it’s#1 perch,

Bruce Cockburn was at 27 with the folky Wondering where the lions are and more diversity with the Spinners, Neil Sedaka, Bob Segar, the Manhattan Transfer, Kenny Rogers, Tom Petty even Frank Sinatra was in the chart with New York New york, perhaps the biggest shock was that Punk and New Wave acts who were once very much underground just a few years before were starting to flood the charts as Blondie was at the top of the charts with Call Me, Gary Numan was at 10 with Cars, The Pretenders, at 16 with Brass in Pocket (I’m Special) even the Clash at 23 with Train in Vain (Stand by Me).

Seriously when else in the history of music was there that much diversity between genres and artists? Incredible. That was the week that a band from the booming music scene of Athens Georgia watched their debut single ROCK LOBSTER hit the top 100, peaking at #56. the B52’s comprised of Fred Schneider vocals and percussion Kate Pierson Keith Stricklland (DRUMMER in the beginning and brother and sister Cindy and Ricky Wilson who sang and played guitar.

The B52’s debut album was full of campy new wave charisma and this was never more on display than with Rock Lobster a new wave masterpiece of epic proportions.

The B-52's formed in 1976 when the aforementioned members all had an impromptu jam session after partaking of a Flaming Volcano drink at a Chinese restaurant in Athens, Georgia. Actually when they first jammed, Strickland played guitar while Ricky Wilson played congas. at their first gig which happened on Valentines Day, Ricky played guitar.. Their Avant Garde tendencies served the band well as they supported each other well with Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson’s Beehive hairdos and Fred Schneider eccentric persona.
