Lion - The King of Africa / Documentary (English/HD)

Huge in size, hefty in weight, and producing a bone-chilling intimidating roar, the lion is indeed a majestic animal! Being the second-largest of the Big Cats (second to tigers), lions not only possess regal attitudes, but also have majestic looking physical features.

Lions are the most social of all the other big cats! It is much social than Jaguars, Cougars, Leopards and the notoriously solitary tiger. This is because lions are the only Big Cats that live in groups called prides. You may see other big cats in twos and threes such as a mother and her cubs or a female and male when it is mating time, but you’ll rarely see them in groups consisting of up to five adults, whereas, a pride of lions might have up to 40 lions. We’ll discuss more on that later, for now, let’s examine their size and weight.

Regarding size and weight, there is a considerable difference in the size and weight of male and female lions. The males are often visibly larger than the females. Male lions grow to lengths measuring up to 7 feet (or 2.1 meters) without tail. The tail alone can measures up to another 3 feet (that’s about 90 cm).

On the other hand, female lions or lionesses often do not grow between 5 and 6 feet (or about 1.5 to 1.8 meters) in length without tail.

If a lion were to stand on its hind legs, it would stand taller than the averagely tall human but at its shoulder level, a male lion would often measure between 3.5 and 4 feet (or up to 1.2 meters) tall in shoulder height.

In terms of weight, it is understandable that male lion often weigh more than females. While males may weigh anything from 330 to 550 pounds/150 to 250 kg, females would often weigh about 265 to 395 pounds/120 to 180 kg. Having examined their size, weight and height, let us consider natural habitats where lions can still be found.

Did you know that lions used to roam and rule Africa, Asia, and Europe? Today however, they have disappeared altogether from Europe and had almost even disappeared from Asia also except for the conservatory effort of India in 1965.

Other than deserts and tropical rainforests, lions inhabit a wide range including grasslands, open woodlands and scrubs. They can be found living in these ranges in several parts of Africa and in the protected “Gir Forest”, also known as “Gir National Park”, of Northwest India where a small population of Asiatic/Indian lions thrive.

The African lion on the other hand can be found in several African countries especially in countries like Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania, Sudan, Mozambique and Uganda where it is believed that lions have been in existence for more than a million years.
