The Story You Stopped Telling

I recently spoke at an invitation-only event for a group of 1000 business owners and sales leaders – people at the TOP of their game. And after the session I had the pleasure of talking with a few of them… And the most common revelation from the session… ?? They said, “I USED to tell my story…. And then I stopped.” That event wasn’t the first time I’ve heard that comment and I’m sure it won’t be the last. So I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to REMIND you that… that sometimes the story you need to tell… is the one you USED to TELL! ESPECIALLY if you’ve been doing what you do .. for a while now. There’s a good chance that when you first got started – you DID tell your story… you DID rely on a story to bridge the gap between your passion and your experience or lack there of. However, over time, two things happen… The first is – YOU CHANGE! With time you became more experienced. You gained more knowledge and understanding of the nuances of your work or industry and became passionate about THAT! Which is great… But remember… though YOU have changed… your potential clients… have NOT. The people who are encountering you and what you do for the first time – TODAY – are the SAME as the people who encountered who you are and what you do for the first time 5 years ago, or 10 years. Or 25 years ago. Just because YOU’VE changed, doesn’t mean THEIR NEEDS have… They still NEED that story. The Second thing that probably happened is you just got TIRED of your story. Right?! Who wants to tell the SAME STORY for decades??I get it. But for the new people you’re telling the story to… the story is NEW. And, if it’s a story that WORKS… then that’s all that matters. So take a moment… look back to the beginning of your career. Was there a story you USED to tell?? If so, it’s time to dust that one off and start telling it again.
