Transportation Problem UV Method MODI Method
UV Method (MODI Method), short for Modified Distribution Method, is an optimization technique used to improve an initial basic feasible solution in a transportation problem. It calculates opportunity costs for unallocated cells using dual variables U (for rows) and V (for columns), helping determine whether the current solution is optimal.
If all opportunity costs (also called net evaluations) are zero or positive, the solution is optimal. If any are negative, the method identifies the cell with the most negative opportunity cost and adjusts allocations along a closed loop to reduce total transportation cost. This process is repeated iteratively until an optimal solution is reached.
MODI is more efficient than the stepping stone method and is widely used in Operations Research for minimising transportation costs.
