Project Evaluation Review and Technique (PERT )
The Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is a project management tool used to plan, schedule, and coordinate tasks, especially when activity durations are uncertain. Developed by the U.S. Navy in the 1950s, PERT uses three time estimates—optimistic, most likely, and pessimistic—to calculate expected durations and assess project timelines more accurately. By identifying the critical path, it highlights tasks that directly affect project completion, aiding in better time and resource management. PERT is widely applied in research and development projects, construction planning, software development, defense and aerospace projects, and other complex, time-sensitive initiatives where precise scheduling is crucial despite uncertain timelines.
