Courage To Lead

“My story is about Fannie Lou Hamer who played an important role in the civil rights movement and it is told by Ms. Hattie Jordan who runs the Fannie Lou Hamer Garden and Memorial Museum in Ruleville.

It is important to tell this story at this time because Fannie Lou Hamer, like many others, had to undergo many obstacles to give us the rights and we should honor her to keep her dreams alive.

I plan to keep her spirit alive by letting people know who she was and what she did - especially people who have never been to Mississippi and people who never heard of her, like younger kids in Sunflower and the Mississippi Delta.”
- Kaitara Baker, age 16, Ruleville Central High School; 5th year Freedom Project Fellow

During the week of May 27 - June 3 — eight youth, ages 12 - 17, from Sunflower County Freedom Project, participated in a week long Youth Leadership Workshop and Media Immersion, culminating with a final screening focused on themes of 'Civil Rights' and ‘Civic Engagement’.

The resulting photo documentaries, written and produced by youth themselves, feature beloved members of the community such as Mildred Downey, one of the original visionaries behind Sunflower County Freedom Project, Hattie R. Jordan of Fannie Lou Hamer Garden and Memorial Museum in Ruleville, Jeannie Russel of Russell Grocery, Ms. Virginia McLurian, a Civil Rights activist, and Ms. Beverly Fulton.
