Holding Our Country

During the week of July 8 – July 15, eight youth, ages 10 - 16, from The Meridian Freedom Project, participated in a week long Youth Leadership Workshop and Media Immersion, culminating with a final screening focused on themes of 'Civil Rights' and ‘Civic Engagement’.

"Holding Our Country" is about the upholding principles of fairness and equality and taking the time to pass on what you learn to others.

"Interviewing Ms. Sturdivant and Ms. Hudnall helped me to express my enthusiasm and to always ask questions. I learned that it’s important to learn more about people.

My invitation to the community is that if you want to impact someone, do it! Don’t be afraid to step and show your passion for what you want to do.”

- Taleah Anderson, age 11, Meridian Freedom Project Fellow

The resulting photo documentaries, written and produced by youth themselves, feature beloved leaders in the community including: Ms. Syria Sturdivant (first female lawyer in Meridian), Ms. Aa'Keela L.S. Hudnall (Attorney & Musician); Judge Veldore Graham, Ricky Hood (CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of East Mississippi); Ms. Fannie Mae Johnson (Executive Director, L.O.V.E's Kitchen); Civil Rights leader, Mr. Roscoe Jones; and music enthusiast, Mrs. Janice Shaw.

Special thanks to Saint Paul Methodist Episcopal Church. Saint Paul has a rich and glorious history starting with the Freedman’s Bureau School which played a pivotal role in the education of African Americans after the Civil War. Additionally, Saint Paul became a part of the Freedom Trail during the 2014 Fiftieth Year Commemoration of the Freedom Summer 1964, and continues to host community conversations around racial reconciliation and social justice under the leadership of Rev. E. Maurice Boger.

Thanks to all the MFP parents, grandparents, youth mentors, staff and community members; Anna Watson, The Phil Hardin Foundation and local caterers Hillbilly Dot.
