How to Change Polybutylene Pipe Shutoff Valves to Copper

In this polybutylene pipe repair video we show you how to change polybutylene shut off valves from polybutylene pipes (with the grey pipe fittings). We'll teach you how to convert polybutylene plumbing shut off valves to standard compression copper water shut off valves. In this polybutylene to copper conversion repair, we take the grey pipe plumbing fittings, and convert them from polybutylene plumbing to copper using the SharkBite polybutylene adapter to connect to this PB Pipe and make your grey pipe problems go away. Polybutylene plumbing is sometimes referred to as PBPipe or PB pipe, and is a flexible gray pipe plumbing system used by builders in the 1970s and 1980s, and was outlawed in 1994 after numerous class action lawsuits proved this system of grey pipe plumbing suffered costly leaks. You are not allowed to use polybutylene pipes in new construction plumbing applications.

To change shutoff valve from Polybutylene to copper compression fitting, we cut off the old valve by slicing through the grey pipe. Next, we change sink shut off valve by creating our own water shut off valve assembly on the countertop where it is easy to build it.

We start with the Shark Bite polybutylene adapter which is one of a few SharkBite polybutylene fittings they have, then insert a 2" length of copper pipe into the copper end, leaving the gray polypropylene end open for now. Then you wrench on your new compression fitting water shutoff valve onto the copper pipe. In this case we are using a 90-degree quarter turn angle stop compression fitting for our water shut off valve under the kitchen sink. We hope you enjoyed our plumbing tips.
