POV: Nonverbal Autism and Graduation | It’s very SCARY and Stressful pt26 🤯 #nonverbalautism
For students with nonverbal autism, graduation ceremonies can be a significant challenge due to sensory sensitivities and communication difficulties. However, with proper planning and support, these events can be made accessible and inclusive.
Key Considerations for Making Graduation Inclusive:
Sensory Needs:
Consider potential sensory overload for students with autism. This may include loud noises, bright lights, and overwhelming crowds.
Mitigation: Provide sensory-friendly seating options, minimize noise, and offer quiet spaces for students to de-stress.
Visual Schedules: Use visual aids and calendars to help students understand the schedule and anticipate changes. (From Google)
Our son was able to go across the stage and get his certification and stand on the stage with the other children. However, some of his classmates had to wear noise canceling headphones or even have their parents walk with them and take them off the stage as soon as they could. This school tries to have the neurodiverse children interact and help the children with special abilities.
Having a preteen with autism and non verbal is really scary and stressful. What do you do for your children when you go to a crowded public places? More ideas are welcome!!
By addressing the specific needs of students with nonverbal autism, graduation ceremonies can become inclusive events that celebrate their achievements and inspire them to pursue their future goals.
Please teach your children and loved ones how to love everyone and help if you can!
Another idea - Parent and School Support:
Provide support and guidance to parents and staff on how to best support students with autism during graduation.
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with families, educators, and support staff to create a positive and inclusive graduation experience.
