Patient and former tennis player undergoes quadruple amputation | Ohio State Medical Center

Pneumonia that turned septic had ravaged Ron Rosas' body, causing necrosis, a condition in which cells and tissue die due to lack of blood supply. A star tennis player, in 1992 he was part of the University of Notre Dame team that played in the National Championship. Now, he was facing quadruple amputation and told there was no way to save the elbow in his dominant right arm.

Then, he found Dr. Jason Souza and #OSUWexMed's Military Medicine Program. 1,000 miles away from his home in Dallas, Ron spent more than 70 hours undergoing a series of complex surgeries that not only saved his elbows and preserved more of his legs, but also circumvented the debilitating phantom limb pain that often plagues amputees.

In mid-September, Ron walked in his home for the first time without the aid of a walker - and he hopes to someday play on the grass courts of Wimbledon in Britain.
