6 educational STEM Christmas gifts for creative kids!

There’s a lot of junk out there for kid’s Christmas toys. In this video, I provide six options for gifts with creative and education value. STE(a)M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths) is all the rage, so hopefully this is a good opportunity to see what some of these products can do.

I’ve tried to cover a range of styles and price points. Unfortunately, none of them are really inexpensive. I guess buying interactive technology requires a fairly significant investment. My own children and the children I have used these with at school find them incredibly engaging, so everything here should be good value in the long run.

Just to clarify, when I say ‘limited io for coding’, I’m referring to the fact that something like the Edison can use data from light sensors, microphones, line tracking and proximity sensors whereas the Sphero and Ozobot are limited by comparison. This tends to mean that the coding performed is potentially more superficial in my experience.

The Nulaxy 3D pen was sent to me for review by Nulaxy. The Easythreed Nano was sent at my request by Banggood for review. All robots were purchased with my own money. All opinions expressed are my own.

The Nulaxy 3D pen works just like any other 3D pen, except it has additional safety features and most importantly: customer service and a 3 year warranty in case something goes wrong. The voice prompts weren’t really an annoyance for me, although that might vary from person to person.

Cosmo stole my heart with it’s incredible personality. I’ve yet to meet a person who doesn’t fall in love within 5 minutes.

Edison is a great all rounder. It will take your child from simple bar codes to custom Lego adorned contraptions driven by their own coding.

Sphero is quite unique and powerful in some ways, yet limited in others. There is quite a range from the company, check out some options below:

Ozobot is the most innovative robot here. It is the best one for very young children and should grow with them as their capabilities increase. If you think the Bit is too limited, please check out the EVO.

If you judge this printer on merit alone, instead of what other printers it looks like, it does a pretty good job. An Ender 3 is more capable but understandably many parents would not want to hand over something that complex to their children, unless they were skilled enough to oversee. This printer avoids that issue.
