How to Make Termite Shields for Older Homes

Making shields as a physical barrier for subterranean termites out of galvanized metal flashing. These shields go on top of the CMU (concrete masonry unit / concrete block) piers, several inches above grade (at least 6-8" above finish grade). Drill holes through the top of the shield (not the edge where the termites crawl) the anchor bolts go through the shields, but then construction grout covers the holes and fills the gap between the shield and the structural framing. Add a vapor barrier to prevent vapor transmission from the concrete to the wood and you're set.

Physical termite shields are not a substitute for chemical treatment of termites, and physical shields obviously do nothing for drywood flying termites.
