9. Hundreds Of Villages
While the amazon jungle seems like a very challenging place to live, it looks like the forest was once home to thriving societies and millions of people!! Now, you see these areas and they look like no one has ever lived there.

8. The Giant Ground Sloth
Giant ground sloths look nothing like the sloths we know and love today. They are an extinct species of sloth that lived in the Americas during the Ice Age and they were huge! The largest ground sloth, Megalonyx jeffersonii, could grow up to ten feet long and up to 2,200 pounds.

7. Amazon Water Lilies
This might sound pretty tame but the plants in the Amazon are hard core! And some get to be enormous!! The plants that grow along the Amazon River are equipped to tolerate extreme environments, owing to the river’s tendency to fluctuate by as much as 45 feet (13 meters) during years that experience heavy rainfall, as well as the harsh dry season and then severe flooding.

6. A Lost City
A 2010 study by anthropologist Denise Schaan from the Federal University of Pará in Belém, Brazil and a team of colleagues details the discovery of hundreds of squares, circles, and other shapes in the upper Amazon Basin. Once shrouded by dense forest, the man-made formations point toward the existence of a previously unknown civilization in the region.

5. Bullet Ant
The bullet ant is considered to be the world’s most painful insect!! Native to the rainforests of central and South America, a sting from this ant is not something you want to experience. These ants are kind of big for ants, about an inch long and they can stick to just about anything!

4. Uncontacted Tribes Of Vale Do Javari
Occuping a 32,990-square-mile (85,445 km2) area -- a vast tract of land larger than modern-day Austria -- Vale do Javari is one of Brazil’s largest indigenous territories. Located in the western region of the State of Amazonas, the area is home to an estimated 3,000 indigenous individuals, including members of the Matis, Matses, Kulina, Mayoruna, and other tribes.

3. The Boiling River
During his childhood, geophysicist Andrés Ruzo’s Peruvian grandfather told him about a boiling river called the Shanay-timpishka, which killed any creature that entered it. Everyone assumed it was just a legend, a story passed on.

2. Last Surviving Tribe Member
Since the 1990s, Brazilian officials have tracked a man who lives in the Amazon jungle of Rondônia State. They believe that he is the last surviving member of an uncontacted tribe, and that he’s lived alone for over two decades.

1. A Newly Observed Tribe
The term “uncontacted” can be more than a tad misleading, because it suggests that an indigenous tribe has never interacted with the outside world. This is hardly the case, as many, if not most so-called “uncontacted” tribes have, in fact, encountered other humans.
