Fort Defiance: An Intersection of Histories in Early America | North Carolina Weekend | UNC-TV

Fort Defiance, home to Revolutionary War General William Lenoir, offers hands-on learning experiences for visitors that create a link to our state’s origins.

Constructed between 1788 and 1792, Lenoir's plantation home was named in remembrance of the original Fort Defiance, a stronghold built by colonists to protect themselves against the Cherokee. Here at Fort Defiance, you can learn how the histories of several peoples - natives, colonists, and the enslaved - come together to form American history, and about the legacy of General Lenoir.

General Lenoir served as a state legislator, president of the Council of State, and president of the first Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina. The City of Lenoir and Lenoir County are named in his honor.
