Did We See a Ghost?

We have a memorable stay and play golf trip. Spectacular views, plus plentiful food and drink. And you may even see an historic ghost — along with some challenging golf. That is no hyperbole from Champ Detamore, the new Director of golf at Wedgefield Country Club, near Georgetown, South Carolina — the newest gem on the Myrtle Beach golf trail. Wedgefield was built before the American Revolution — when it was a rice plantation. It’s a history you see and feel. It is a country club that is open to the public and golfers who like to walk. But it also has private golf memberships. And we all love speed of play. Part of Wedgefield’s beauty is the water hazards that can make your score not too pretty. A tough front 9? Stop at the turn at the historic 19th Century Brick House Pub for plenty of libations and — pizza? Another stay and play advantage at Wedgefield is nearby downtown Georgetown — loaded with shops, entertainment, bars, and -- great food. We hit the River Room that was fabulous. We highly suggest the ribeye steak, cooked to perfection. We would also suggest the blackened Ahi tuna seared with a little sushi flavor. Here’s a jetsetter tip for The River Room. Eat in the bar. It’s like a museum with TVs. You will bypass a long waiting line since they don’t take reservations. And you get the entertaining bartender Matt. Champ is right about that too. We stayed in a restored apartment and one of the historic cabins. These are great spots to relax and enjoy with family and friends. And you might also meet -- a new friend — the Wedgefield - headless - ghost. The ghostly tale involves American revolutionary hero, Francis Marion, known as the swamp fox, because he eluded the red coats. But we did see something. Well Champ is still there so maybe it was just a night owl groundskeeper. Or maybe a playful prankster visitor. Either way, come see for yourself.
