Air China 747-8 at China's Newest Mega-Airport 成都天府

China’s latest mega-airport has recently commenced operation at the nation’s South-western Sichuan province. The opening of Chengdu’s Tianfu airport is making Chengdu only the third city in China to have two active commercial airports concurrently, after Beijing and Shanghai.

Chengdu is well known to foreigners for being the hometown of Panda. In recent years, it has also become an increasingly important metropolitan in China’s Southwest. With a population of 16 million, Chengdu is the largest city in Sichuan and ranks No.7 in Chinese cities’ GDP.
In 2020, the city’s Shuangliu airport was even ranked the world’s third busiest in terms of passenger traffic.

The inaugural brigade was formed by three airlines (Sichuan, Air China, China Eastern). I chose to fly with Air China’s 747-8 which was the second aircraft taking off from Tianfu after Sichuan’s A350. Flying onboard inaugural is a super exciting and surprising experience as you could never predict what would happen on the actual day.

It was an honour to witness another milestone in China’s flourishing aviation industry and I cannot wait to share my insights with all of you.
