Hoedown by ELP/Keith Emerson & Aaron Copland (Cover)

I had the unbelievable pleasure of playing this on Keith Emerson’s Rig several weeks ago at EMEAPP, where several of my dreams came true. I deeply appreciate the generosity and kindness of the EMEAPP Directors, and I hope that you will support them in their mission to Preserve significant Electronic Musical Instruments for future generations.

It was really great to work with Jon again on this one!

For those interested in the sounds: I think Emerson's best organ sounds were when he used guitar amps rather than the standard Leslie amps. I have done a lot of experimenting and my best Hammond tones are when I do the same: I use a Carr Slant 6V amp to drive my Leslie. I made a box with a variable resistor, etc. to drop the strength of the Hammond signal, as it is very hot. I use the gain side of the amp but keep it pretty clean. As to the opening sweeping Moog sound: Some people have had better luck with some differences, but after lots of experimenting, this is what worked best for me: I preferred three different specific oscillator pitches: I keep Osc 1 as a drone; a D plays a D. Oscillator 2 and 3 travel immediately from a D up three octaves. When they hit the higher D's, they fall quickly, but not immediately, down the few notes to A's. (These A's are separated by two octaves, as I explain below.) When you let go, they fall back to their starting D pitches (again, these D's are separated by two octaves). So again, I separate those two oscillators by two octaves. Oscillator 2 is tuned down two octaves (-24 ) while 1 and 3 are not. I use the Filter EG to control the pitches (because I think that it is the filter EG on the original): Att. 416 ms, Decay 2 ms, Sustain 110.2, and Release 0. Attack sets the time to glide up the three octaves, Decay gives the short time it takes to drop back to the A's, Sustain is used to set the pitch of the A's, and the Release of 0 makes them fall immediately back to the starting pitches. In order to get the pitches to glide up three octaves, I used three Modulation Slots for both Osc 2 and Osc 3: Env 1/Filter E.G. controls the Osc Pitch. Slots 1 and 2 are set to 128, and Slot 3 is set to 104. I also think the the original patch is sharp, and so I tuned the oscillators up 6-7 cents.
