Jeremiah Wright Interview: The Controversial Sermon's Impact on Obama's Campaign
Pastor Jeremiah Wright recalls growing up with parents who were both ministers, attending college during the Civil Right Movement, joining the military, and finding his calling as a minister. Wright discusses his friendship with Barack Obama, him joining his congregation at the Trinity United Church of Christ, and the controversial sermon that made Obama distance himself and how their relationship changed.
Jeremiah Alvesta Wright Jr. is a pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, a congregation he led for 36 years, during which its membership grew to over 8,000 parishioners. Following retirement, his beliefs and preaching were scrutinized when segments of his sermons about terrorist attacks on the United States and government dishonesty were publicized in connection with the 2008 presidential campaign of Barack Obama.
From the 2021 three-part HBO documentary series Obama: In Pursuit Of A More Perfect Union. The personal and political journey of President Barack Obama is explored that weaves together conversations with colleagues, friends, and critics, alongside his own speeches and interviews.
