Malika Saada Saar Interview: The Power of Women

Malika Saada Saar reflects on her journey shaped by the sacrifices of the women in her life. Raised by her mother and grandmother, she witnessed how they provided her with opportunities they were denied and how that determination led her to prioritize education with a focus on justice and societal responsibility. Saar emphasizes the transformative power of creativity in addressing issues like addiction and violence.

Human rights lawyer Malika Saada Saar was born in Pennsylvania and was raised in the Philadelphia area. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University, a Master’s in Education from Stanford University and a J.D. from Georgetown University. Saar serves as YouTube’s Global Head of Human Rights Partnerships. She leads the platform’s efforts in working alongside activists, nonprofits and external partners to advance human rights issues, including in the areas of criminal justice reform, gender equality and racial justice. She was previously Google’s Senior Counsel on Civil and Human Rights. Prior to her time at Google, Malika was a leader in the nonprofit community, having founded and served as Executive Director of both Rights4Girls and The Rebecca Project for Human Rights. She also served on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS during the Obama Administration.

From the 2013 PBS Documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America”, examines how women have helped shape America over the past 150 years, striving for a full and fair share of political power and economic opportunity.
