Comparing Gastric Bypass and Duodenal Switch

The Gastric Bypass and Duodenal Switch (DS) are two bariatric surgery options I offer at Weight Loss & Bariatric Surgery Institute that have some similarities and differences to for patients to consider.

The Bypass includes a small pouch made from the top of the stomach and a rerouted small intestine. The stomach is bypassed. You will take a vitamins for the rest of you life.

The DS starts with a sleeve gastrectomy on the stomach and then rerouting of the duodenum, a section of the small bowel. The Duodenal Switch offers even more malabsorption than the Gastric Bypass, so compliance with vitamin supplementation is very important.

Choice of a bariatric procedure is unique to each patient and depends on their health, goals, lifestyle and limitations. It is important to discuss all of the options with a bariatric surgeon to find the best choice for you.
