Hiatal Hernia, Reflux, and Esophagitis

Hiatal Hernias, where the upper portion of the stomach pushes through the opening in the diaphragm, are frequently undiagnosed. Hiatal hernias often contribute to or cause acid reflux which can lead to patients suffering from Esophagitis and more advanced esophageal conditions, reflux into the lungs, and difficulty eating.

Obesity increases the risk of developing a hiatal hernia as well and we often find hiatal hernias present while performing bariatric procedures. When we do some across hiatal hernias while in the OR, we correct them to avoid complications occurring.
