About this presentation
If someone you love has aphasia, you may find yourself in the role of care supporter – possibly making you the single most important factor in their recovery. During this challenging time of COVID-19, stress levels may be heightened due to limited knowledge of supported conversation strategies, lack of access to community resources or being physically distanced from your partner in an acute care setting.
This webinar will provide you with practical tips and tools to better communicate with someone living with aphasia. We will also explore what impact physical distancing is having on care supporters and people living with aphasia and provide some examples from experts and with a person with lived experience, on how to reduce social isolation, stress and be an effective advocate now and moving forward.

Key Topics
• To discuss the lived experience of care supporters living with or supporting someone with post stroke aphasia during COVID-19.
• To provide an overview of supported conversation tools, techniques and resources that you can start using in your daily communications.
• To discuss the very real strains that social distancing has had on care supporters’ mental health and relationships, and how to build resiliency and hope.
• To provide practical tips about how to talk to your doctor and advocate as a caregiver in an acute setting when you cannot be physically present during COVID-19.
