Madeira Island Black Fig - 2021 Update

We've been growing Madeira Island Black since purchasing cuttings from Keith (KK) in December 2014. Our tree stayed in a pot for 2-3 years before being planted in our orchard. Keith indicated he had acquired several figs from a seller in Madeira, all being called just "black fig" and this was originally sold to me as "black fig from Madeira Island" but a year or two later it was renamed Madeira Island Black.

Last year I commented in my video that I believed it was the same as Black Madeira, Figo Preto, Violeta, etc. and I continue to believe that to be the case. It is a great fig (as is Black Madeira, etc.) and we will continue to sell it under the name this is sold by others.

This tree has not grown particularly great for us and it could be the soil in this location, but it's growth habit is similar to our other trees which we consider to be synonyms. We did graft Madeira Island Black onto a large tree of 'Sierra' we have and it is growing much more vigorously, similar to how our Black Madeira grafted onto Brown Turkey grows.
