Queen Victoria gave birth to 9 children in 17 years. But she wasn’t exactly the world’s greatest mother. Victoria’s older daughters were married to important future monarchs and scales the peaks of European politics. But when Albert died at 42 Victoria fell into an intense depression and used her younger daughters as an emotional crutch, selfishly stunting their lives and freedom. None the less they all lived compelling lives; one a sculptress and suffragette and two captivated by nursing. Here are the stories of Queen Victoria’s five fascinating daughters:
Victoria, Empress of Germany (1840-1901)
Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse (1843-1878)
Helena, Princess of Schleswig-Holstein (1846-1923)
Louise, Duchess of Argyll (1848-1931)
Beatrice, Princess of Battenberg (1857-1944)
