Olivia Newton John ~ Physical 1981 Disco Purrfection Version

Hey, I'm lost in the 80's tonight.......This song appealed to so many people that it held down the top spot for 10 weeks back in 1981. Someone asked me to remix it some time ago and I finally got to it today! I just did not see the potential in remixing it with the official 7:00 extended version and the 6:30 Hot Tracks version which was a little choppy. So I dipped into the catnip and everything came together in an hour and a half. I wasn't going to upload anything, but I felt like something retro peppy and I just wanted to hear Olivia tonight. I feel like this is Olivia's "Hot Stuff". The two songs feature a female aggressor looking to get "Physical"/"Hot Stuff" and had huge career defining hits.

Olivia was on the rise to superstardom through her portrayal of good girl Sandy to bad girl Sandy in 1978's "Grease". Her next LP "Totally Hot" (1979) mined this leather clad transition through the album's cover art with ONJ wearing "those pants" and a leather coat, gaining high gear with the singles the #11 "Deeper Than The Night" and the suggestively sexy "A Little More Love" that took her all the way to #3 on the Hot100.

The quality of her music continued to improve as evidenced by her next two singles which were the 1980 soundtrack singles "Magic" that spent four weeks at #1 and then "Xanadu" made the Top 10 by reaching #8 with her collaborations with the Electric Light Orchestra fro the film.

After the promotion for "Totally Hot" wound down, it was time for a new album and Livvy said she felt like doing "something peppy" so she when was presented a song from the songwriting duo of Steve Kipner and Terry Shaddick titled "Physical", she thought it was a great way to address the keep fit craze through a funky beat. That single proved it had the stamina to keep two very strong singles out of the top spot with the #2 single by Foreigner "Waiting For A Girl Like You" stalled at #2 for 10 weeks making chart history. They ended up getting beat down for the count when Hall & Oates " I Cant Go For That" leapfrogged over them to take the top spot the week that "Physical" dropped out of the top spot. In a weird twist of fate, Hall & Oates previous single, the #2 "Private Eyes" was the first song that "Physical" steamrolled over, but they did not go for that for long.
