How can the creative industries impact on our changing world?
Fifth in the series of Edinburgh Culture Conversations - held n Monday 10th August 2020. Produced by the University of Edinburgh's Festivals, Culture and City Events Team and hosted by Director, Janet Archer.
The creative industries were positioned as providing 1 in every 11 UK jobs in 2019. How hard have they been hit over past months compared to other industries? Has their triple bottom line value [cultural, social and economic] been recognised during this period?

Joanna Baker CBE
Joanna Baker is Chair of the National Partnership for Culture, an advisory group to Scottish Minsters. She is Chair of the National Youth Choir of Scotland, a Trustee of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Edinburgh International Culture Summit Foundation. She was Managing Director of the Edinburgh International Festival from 2006 – 2018 and is now an independent consultant.
Simon Brault
In 2019, Simon Brault’s mandate as Director and CEO of the Canada Council for the Arts was renewed for four years. He has been at the head of the Council since 2014. Also in 2019, Simon Brault became the first Canadian to be elected Chair of the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA).
Professor Giorgio Fazio
Professor Giorgio Fazio is an applied economist with expertise in open macroeconomics, international trade and investment, growth and inequality, civic and cultural capital, creative industries. Giorgio is Chair of Macroeconomics and, in the Creative Industries Policy Evidence Centre, leads the Workstrand on the International Competitiveness of the Creative Industries from Newcastle University.
Clive Gillman
Clive Gillman is the Director of Creative Industries for Creative Scotland. Clive’s background is in contemporary art, design and media, having worked as an artist exhibiting internationally and across the UK. He was previously Associate Director of FACT in Liverpool, before becoming the Director of Dundee Contemporary Arts from 2005-2015.
Professor Candace Jones
Candace Jones is the Chair of Global Creative Enterprise at UoE and co-edited the Oxford Handbook of Creative Industries (2015). She is currently on two ₤6 million AHRC grants: (1) Creative Informatics: Data Driven Innovation for the Creative Industries (University of Edinburgh) and (2) Policy and Evidence Centre for Creative Industries (NESTA).
Sharon Watson
Sharon Watson is the CEO & Principal of Northern School of Contemporary Dance and former Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Leeds Beckett University. She is the recipient of multiple accolades recognising achievement in business and the arts, including Northern Power Women and the Black British Business Awards.
