GERMAN FOUNTAIN

The German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, committed to present this monument to the Ottoman Empire as a memory of his second visit to Istanbul in 1898. The construction of the fountain started in 1899 and it was opened 2 years later with a magnificent ceremony on January 27 in 1901, the birthday of Wilhelm II.

The German Fountain resembles neither the European fountains with sculptures nor the Ottoman square fountains. It is an octagonal structure resting on a high base. There is a dome carried by eight columns right above the water reservoir. The following is written in German on the bronze inscription of the fountain: "German Kaiser Wilhelm II had this fountain built in the autumn of 1898 before the majestic ruler of the Ottomans, Abdulhamid II, in memory of his visit."

The interior of the dome is covered with gold mosaics. In four of the eight medallions on this end, Sultan II. Abdulhamit's monogram has been engraved on a green background. And in the other four, the letter "W" on Prussian blue with a crown above it symbolizing Wilhelm and the imperial coat of arms, consisting the number "II", were embroidered with mosaic.
