Wild Crocodiles & Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve: Singapore Nature 2020

Not everyone is aware that Singapore has a wild Saltwater Crocodile population, otherwise known as Estuarine Crocodiles. It is one of the largest species of crocodiles in the world and have been known to grow to 8 meters and 1000 kilos. The crocodiles in Singapore are mainly concentrated around Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve but have been sighted in estuaries and reservoirs including: the Singapore River, Kallang River, Sungei Seletar, Kranji Reservoir and Pulau Tekong. Singapore's crocodiles are listed as critically endangered in the Red List of threatened animals in Singapore. They are victims of habitat loss and human persecution. They are also hunted for their hides which are used to make leather goods such as handbags. However they are protected now in Singapore.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a unique and true wonder of nature. It is made up of thick mangroves, forest, ponds and mudflats filled with immeasurable biodiversity. Since it was protected and made a nature reserve back in 1993, it has been expanded to over 202ha. It is also recognised as an internationally important site for migratory birds. The wildlife is truly stunning, including: Monitor Lizards, Otters, Snakes (including Reciprocated Pythons, King Cobras, Black Spitting Cobra, Paradise Tree Snakes and Pit Vipers), Crabs, Lobsters, Snails, a wide array of bird life (including many variety of Kingfishers, Sun Birds, woodpeckers, Bee-eaters, Weavers, Eagles, Kites, Falcons, Herons etc), Long Tailed Macaques, spiders and countless exotic insects. It is a birdwatchers Mecca with over 250 species recorded there to date.

If you are intent on seeing the the Crocodiles, it is best to time your visit at low tide and position yourself on the main bridge and hope for the best!

A huge thank you to Shan (Shanmuga Sundaram) for the additional footage. Shan is a fantastic local nature photographer and a wealth of information, that he does not mind to share. I also apologise for filming the footage on my mobile phone; i saw most of the encounters by chance whilst trekking.
