Have you ever seen a handwritten boarding pass? One passenger flying on Tigerair flight IT751 from Oita, Japan, back to Taiwan was handed a handwritten boarding pass after booking the ticket just three hours in advance, much to his surprise. Tigerair said at some second and third-tier cities, the computers can’t connect to real-time international flight information, so they use handwritten boarding passes.

This passenger’s flight information, including the date, seat, and gate, is written in black ballpoint pen, making a handwritten boarding pass. Needless to say, people were quite surprised to see it.

This rarely happens in advanced countries these days. But with the sudden power outages in Spain and Portugal recently, that also tested ground personnel.

It’s a little messy. Why would they do it this way? It feels like it has no commemorative value.

People had a lot of opinions about this. It turns out that a Taiwanese person had to suddenly fly from Oita, Japan, back to Taiwan on April 30 because of a family emergency. When he arrived at the airport to catch Tigerair flight IT751, he was surprised to be handed a handwritten boarding pass. He thought the printer might be broken, and it certainly made for an unforgettable memory.

Travel expert
Every airline has a standard practice for handwriting boarding passes, with varying formats. They exist, but are rarely used. They’re usually only used as a backup if the system crashes or can’t connect.

Last July when Microsoft had a massive crash, some passengers also got handwritten boarding passes. Tigerair explained that because Oita is a local airport with international flights only to South Korea and Taiwan, its computer system can’t access real-time international flight information. It has an offline mode, which is when handwritten boarding passes are used. Oita, famous for its hot springs, is a popular tourist destination for people in Taiwan. One person’s flight back was made especially memorable after being handed this handwritten pass.
