A teenager from Eswatini is ready to go back to his country after receiving life-changing medical care in Taiwan. The 15-year-old had severe eye problems when he was diagnosed in February. The complex combination of conditions made Chang Gung Memorial Hospital assemble an interdisciplinary team to treat him, and restored his vision from 0.1 to 0.7 in both eyes. The teen says he hopes to one day come back to Taiwan and study here.

Now I can see clearly, and write better. I’d like to thank Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and all the people who helped me.
Orphaned at a young age, Hsiao Ching’s vision had deteriorated drastically by the time he was diagnosed. Limited medical resources in his home country meant his medical history was sparse.
In February, he had a visual acuity of 0.1 for his right eye, and 0.16 for his left, and the figures were only getting worse, making him unable to read the blackboard in class. He arrived in Taiwan on April 3, and was diagnosed with hyperopia combined with high astigmatism on his right eye, and severe iris adhesion and posterior capsule opacity on his left eye. Surgery was crucial.
After a two-hour operation, Hsiao Ching’s visual acuity was restored to 0.7 for both eyes.

We performed laser surgery on his right eye. For the left eye, we implanted an artificial lens, separated the iris adhesions and performed a vitrectomy. He’s recovering really well.

I wish I had another opportunity to come to Taiwan and study now that my eyes are recovered.
Due to the complexity of Hsiao Ching’s case, the hospital brought together a team with several different specialties. Before his return to Eswatini, the team offered him parting gifts, including a Formosan black bear plushie, to wish him health and safety. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says his case is proof that “Taiwan Can Help” is not just a slogan, but a reality. As for Hsiao Ching, he says he hopes to one day come back to Taiwan for his studies.
